TEACHING, “A PERSONAL VIEW”

By Nick Stenning Nick photoAfter spending many years working in London as a manager in logistics, I decided that I needed a life change and a new challenge. Fortunately my wife was in agreement and as we already had an apartment in Salou a move to Catalunya seemed like a good idea. Despite some initial problems of settling into a new culture and language, it was the best decision that I have ever made. I discovered that I could use my native English language to my advantage and after taking some teacher training courses to become a qualified teacher, I found work here, in the Bristol Academy. With the help and guidance of Anabel, I have found that teaching is a very rewarding profession to be in. It can be very demanding at times, because ultimately teachers are responsible for educating their students and to make sure that they are learning to their full potential, obviously this is helped by the students desire to learn. We spend a lot of time researching new material appropriate for each student, marking homework and continually evaluating our students. But the research and preparation of these new and interesting activities help us to keep our students motivated and attentive in class. Teachers have a responsibility for making sure that lessons are engaging and interesting, especially with young students, so teaching requires different approaches depending on the group. With the children I’ve found that it brings out the child in me! With the older students it’s different: they can be very objective and quite often I have had to think hard about the reasons why in English we use or say something in a particular way, something that you naturally take for granted and it isn’t! Sometimes I doubt, as it is normal, but the most important is looking for the right answer! It is very gratifying to see all students’ progress with my help, but in future years to see the children we have taught come through the academy I think will be especially satisfying.
